DNC: National GOP Agenda Would Be No Cup Of Tea

28 Jul

Today, DNC Chair Tim Kaine and Vice Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz held a press conference to introduce what they’ve deemed the “Republican-Tea Party Contract With America.” The DNC is heralding  what they call “a blueprint for how the Republican-Tea Party would govern, based on actual positions taken and held by Republican-Tea Party members.”

  1. Repeal the Affordable Care Act (Health Insurance Reform)
  2. Privatize Social Security or phase it out altogether
  3. End Medicare as it presently exists
  4. Extend the Bush tax breaks for the wealthy and big oil
  5. Repeal Wall Street Reform
  6. Protect those responsible for the oil spill and future environmental catastrophes
  7. Abolish the Department of Education
  8. Abolish the Department of Energy
  9. Abolish the Environmental Protection Agency
  10. Repeal the 17th Amendment, which provides for the direct election of senators

Political gimmick or not, there’s no question that several of the listed items demand some sort of substantive response from GOP candidates currently seeking office, including the likes of John Boozman, Timmy! Griffin, and Rick Crawford.

If Repugs want to repeal HCR (not happening, but whatever), then voters must demand to learn what their alternative is, because nobody (except, perhaps, big insurance and the richest among us) thought the status quo was working. Still want to privatize Social Security, even though we’ve since learned that if Bush had his way, we would’ve seen the complete collapse of the entire system within his second term in office? Fine, but how will you ensure the solvency of the system we all know must be there for our seniors (and for those of us paying into the system now expecting a payout one day)? Extend the Bush tax cuts, you say? Yet, you’re still bitching about the deficit? You don’t get to have it both ways.

Republicans, if you’re unwilling to be held accountable by going on record as being  for anything (aside from, I suppose, the nonsensical and illogical “retire Pelosi!” refrain), then you leave it to us to define you based on your talking point recitals. Unlike 1994’s original GOP “Contract With America,” your party’s platform today is completely devoid of new ideas, and your ranks are completely devoid of true intellectual leadership. Perhaps most unfortunately, at least for America in general, is that this latter void is now being filled by the goons and racists who used to make up the fringes of your party. While I might disagree with people like Newt Gingrich on nearly every issue, at least he and other GOP leaders of elections past were offering some sort of alternative view, not just foaming-at-the-mouth style rants and raves about “losing America” because we elected a black president.
