Breaking News: Turner Stepping Down As DPA Chair

14 Jan

Following the history-making election beatdown Arkansas Democrats took from nearly all GOPers on the ballot not named Jim Keet, it made a lot of sense for Todd Turner to step down as state party chairman, both professionally-speaking, but more importantly, so that the long-term re-branding of the party could begin. In fact, many progressives were calling for it, despite Turner’s close ties to historically-popular Governor Mike Beebe.

So, while this morning’s news of that Turner will not seek a second-term cannot be seen as a total surprise to most state Dems, I think the timing of the announcement — done after sticking it out for a few weeks after the election as people were seemingly calling for his head — caught many of us off guard.

UPDATE: Governor Mike Beebe announced his support for former State Representative Will Bond as the next party chairman.

“Will Bond is a friend and colleague,” Governor Beebe added.  “I believe he will be an excellent leader as the next chairman of the Democratic Party of Arkansas.  Will has the energy and vision to lead the next steps in the road ahead.  It won’t be easy, but I know Will is up to the job.”

Bond, an attorney and former State Representative from Jacksonville, said if elected chairman he will focus on building the party at the state and local levels.

“There is much work to be done, and thankfully many people ready to help with it,” Bond said.  “As chairman, I will work with Governor Beebe and other elected officials as well as Democrats across the state and Arkansans of all backgrounds to build on our strengths and assess new ways we can grow the party. Working together, we can help address the critical issues before our state – job growth, cutting the grocery tax, balancing the budget and continuing to improve our schools.”

Elections for DPA officers will be held in Hot Springs on Saturday, February 12, 2011, at the first State Committee meeting of the year.
